Spelen en werken…. / Playing and working…..

……..in the stables and the kitchen. My grandfather had a few milk cows, sometimes a few calves and some pigs with piglets.
Outside in the hen house there were chickens (see my earlier post) for eggs and meat, rabbits and pigeons for meat.
Grandpa regularly gave a little rabbit to us, that came to our home, where we also had a wooden rabbit hutch to fatten the rabbit.
Nearly every year on a November day the rabbit (who grew like cabbage) suddenly was disappeared. My parents told us that one of us children (we had to take care after the rabbit) didn’t closed the hutch very well and the rabbit was disappeared in the connecting orchard! The rabbit was slaughtered, it was quite normal for that time that this happened, this was a kind of Flappie-story! For the foreign readers: a cabaretier sang a funny song about a rabbit which dissapeared like this way with Christmas. The rabbit was called Flappie :D!

I’ve told you in my previous post about the small window in the “up room” that watches the stable. Especcially if an animal was ill or went calves or pigs had to throw piglets(?), this was very convenient for Grandpa, he had not to walk through the house to the stable and to look what was going on. Indeed the cattle was heard inside the farm, Susan ;), and you could smell you were on a farm. The hay was on the hay attic, called the “hilde”, above the stables for the cows and pigs. The hay was brought in in summer and the wagon drove through the tall partial doors in the side gable of the farm on the side of the road, and than it was stabbed upwards with hay forks and divided on the hay attics.

The “sticks”above the stable floor (this hard stone floor is called the “deel), are called “schlitten”, these are water conserved pine trunks, on which more hay was kept.

Grandpa always had a dog, the most of them were called Tippie, at least that is what I remind me. That dog had to watch over the farm and mostly he lay behind the toilet in the stable or on the “deel”, the floor for the stables. I hope you can see him, scale 1:24 is so small.

On that hard stone floor is a mangle to mangling the beets for the cattle. I also have put there the milking equipment, but normally it wasn’t there. Outside at the kitchendoor was a lacteals rack  and there hung the sink bowl to clean the milking equipment after milking the cows. Because this equipment was too vulnerable to hang on the outside of the miniature farm, I had put it inside on the “deel” floor. The cat, who had to catch the mice, wants a sip of milk ;)!

Verstoppertje spelen was favoriet, we kenden alle hoekjes.

The “deel” also was our playground, if we visited our grandparents (or holidays), we, grandchildren played with was on hand. Hide-and-seek was our favorite game, we knew all the small corners to hide. To challenge each other to balance on the edges of the pig pens was big fun, I think the pigs now and then saw a tip of our leather shoes above their manger and they bit at our shoes. Leather shoes were expensive so….once one of my nephews was lost his shoe for a while, his Mom wasn’t glad with it :D!

In the flower garden was the pigeonry and along the barn were the rabbit hutches. My grandma always hid a lot of fresh eggs with Easter in the flowergarden, the rabbit hutches, the pigeonry etc. If all children arrived, we were allowed to search those eggs: an invasion of children around the farm to look for the eggs! Grandma enjoyed those searching children together with Grandpa and our parents! We searched like mad and the found eggs were carefully lay on Grandma’s apron, while she counted them. Afterwards was the (hard boiled) egg eating in the kitchen, which was far too small for so many people. You sat outside on a garden bench or inside on the “deel”.
The kitchen had a water pump with a crank to pump the water up. The cooking happened on the stove and there were a table, some chairs and a bench for us kids to sit and eat.
On the ceiling of the kitchen were kept all kinds of tools, like a dibble, seed trays , the scythe, bamboo poles to support the beans in their growing time and so on.

In that time the toilet already was placed inside: it was a real porcelain toilet bowl, but no cistern above it. You needed to have a water filled jug standby.
As a kid it was very special experience for us to sit on the toilet next to the cows ;)!

Sometimes feasts were celebrated too on the “deel”, for example when a member of the family got married. Than there cwere some musicians and relatives, friends and neighbours of the new married couple, who all came to dance. This was the marriage of one of my aunts.

Fijne avond Xandra

Hi Ilonka:)
your talent is amazing! I didn't know that this stunning house is so equipped! I thought it was just a model of of the building, without furniture, equipment, until I discovered these wonderful interiors.
I see how much work and time, but you achieved the great result. It's
precious family treasury...
I read your posts with great pleasure, is a beautiful story about the old country life, you are a great guide,

I can say no other word than "masterpiece" - that's what it is. It's like a journey back in old times... absolutely stunning. Btw - in German it's "Diele", but in our Northern Germany dialect it's called "Deel" also. There's even a wellknown folk song "Dans op de Deel"... ;O)

A bientôt ! rosethè

Thank you for your explanation. I must have sounded like that awful prissy cousin who visited with a finger on her nose when I asked that question ..teehee :). (You know I have caught a cold now and have a stuffed nose so I can't smell anything!)

Singapore is today like a huge city. Farms are not common here these days. I still remember how the Malaysians always laugh at us because we get so excited when we see a cow or a horse on Malaysian roads. They are just not everyday sight here.

That's why your account is so interesting for me. When Birgit, Rosanna and I were at the Farm House museum in Molfsee, we peered through the windows to see the furniture inside, wondering about life then. How wonderful it is that we now have an extended tour (tugging Birgit excitedly!) with explanations!

Thank you, my dear Ilona. We love the tour. Next time, we pay but you must give us tea with milk from teh cows..heh heh

By the way, that machine (mangler?), was that made by you? It's amazing! How does it work?

Groeten,
Marit

A fantastic cultural history you have shared with us. I'm from Denmark and can recognize some of what you said and the way of living. It has been an amazing experience to read your story. You have really created something very special here. A cultural treasure. The house could be used in teaching or in a museum. The past history becomes very real, with all the fine things you have done, and as history shows. Very beautiful and exciting made, Ilona. Thank you for sharing some of your childhood.
